Steve Smith: ‘I Feel Horrible … I Lost My Cool’

Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith is expressing remorse after being suspended for two regular season games for breaking Ken Lucas’ nose.

Smith talked with Pro Football Weekly about what happened:”I feel horrible. That’s the thing I don’t think people realize, is how remorseful I am and how, in five or six seconds, five or six years has come crashing down. That’s the consequences of my actions. But I won’t let it be the last thing people remember me by as far as a player and as a person.”

Lucas suffered a broken nose, and his availability is unclear, although he’s not expected to miss major time.

“I lost my cool,” Smith told PFW after the fight. “It started with words and escalated from there.”
Smith has had a long history of losing his temper. He was suspended in 2002 for a fight with Panthers’ practice squad player Anthony Bright. He has also been in fights during college and junior college.

Smith says he will make a statement to the media after he talks to his teammates sometime soon (if not already). The team has placed some behavior guidelines that Smith must follow if he wants to stay in Carolina.
