Carolina Panthers Notes, Quotes 2008-12-30
--The Panthers gave opponents something extra to think about heading into the playoffs when they lined up Steve Smith as a punt returner on Sunday against New Orleans.

Smith returned only one punt.

Coach John Fox said Monday that's something the Panthers might consider doing in the playoffs because Smith is so explosive. While Mark Jones has done an admirable job, any coach in his right mind would rather have the ball in Smith's hands when they need to make a play.

As a rookie Smith went to the Pro Bowl as a returner before emerging into one of the league's best receivers.

--After the game, running backs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart walked into the locker room wearing no shoes. They both gave away their shoes to Carolina fans in the stands who made the trip to New Orleans.

"I gave mine away to some people who had a No. 34 jersey on," Williams said.

--Safety Chris Harris came up with his first interception of the season Sunday, and it was a big one.

Harris picked off Drew Brees late in the first half, and the Panthers cashed in four plays later as Muhsin Muhammad beat Randall Gay on a slant route for an 8-yard touchdown reception from Jake Delhomme.

--It's hard to argue that linebacker Landon Johnson has been anything but a disappointment on defense for the Panthers this season, but he came up with a huge play on special teams Sunday against New Orleans.

With Carolina leading 16-3, Johnson stripped kick returner Skyler Green of the football. Dante Wesley picked up the loose ball and rambled 13 yards for Carolina's first special teams touchdown of the season.

--How many times have we seen this happen in 2008?

With the Saints facing a third-and-goal, Drew Brees fired a pass over the middle and the ball went right through cornerback Richard Marshall's hands. The Saints were able to kick a field goal on the next play to cut Carolina's lead to 6-3. Must be those hand injuries Ken Lucas was talking about last week.

Marshall, by the way, did a lot of talking with the crowd in the second half but wound up having a rough game. He was at least partially responsible for allowing two touchdown passes.

--Winning in dramatic fashion has become business as usual for the Panthers. "You dubbed us the 'Cardiac Cats' a few years ago, right?" kicker John Kasay said after kicking a 42-yard game-winner against New Orleans. "Well, I think you can pull out the hats and the T-shirts and get ready for the ride."

--The Panthers rushed for a franchise-record 2,437 yards this season.
