Carolina Panthers Notes, Quotes 2009-02-16
--The Carolina Panthers are getting ready to throw Julius Peppers' things out of the window - well, sort of.

The Panthers store on their website at www.carolinapanthers.com has listed new player jerseys that are marked down "up to 50 percent off."

Of the 36 different styles of jerseys on sale, 25 feature Peppers' No. 90.

Peppers has indicated through his agent he won't play for the Panthers again. He's due to become an unrestricted free agent on Feb. 27. The team could still attempt to put the franchise tag on him and try to trade him.

Peppers reiterated Sunday at the Pro Bowl that he is ready to move on.

Interestingly enough, the second jersey listed is cornerback Ken Lucas, who could be cut because of salary cap reasons.

I can only assume the Panthers didn't make any D.J. Hackett or Landon Johnson jerseys this past year.

The only other active players whose jerseys are listed in the markdown sections are Chris Gamble (that's safe since he just signed a big contract) and Dwayne Jarrett (who knows?). They each have one jersey listed and both are for youths.

The rest of the jerseys feature former players like Dan Morgan, Keyshawn Johnson, Keary Colbert and David Carr.

--Quarterback Brett Basanez is headed home.

Basanez, who spent last season on the Carolina Panthers practice squad, signed a two-year contract with the Chicago Bears on Thursday.

A Chicago native and former Northwestern star, Basanez appeared in one regular-season game during three years with the Panthers, completing 6 of 11 passes for 56 yards with one interception in a 37-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Dec. 17, 2006.

"It's been a blast being down in Carolina the past couple years," Basanez told www.chicagobears.com. "But being from Chicago, there's really only one team, and to be able to be a part of the Bears organization is just awesome."

He was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2006.

He spent the first 12 weeks of his rookie season on Carolina's practice squad before being promoted to the active roster. The Panthers cut Basanez last year and kept Matt Moore and traded for Josh McCown. He was later re-signed to the practice squad.

Basanez was the 2005 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year at Northwestern and broke 32 school records including career passing yards, total offense, completions and passing touchdowns. He came up four rushing yards shy of becoming the first quarterback in NCAA Division I-A history to finish his career with 10,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards.

The Panthers offered every player on their practice squad a futures contract with the exception of Basanez.

It's unclear where Basanez fits on the Bears depth chart at this point, but he'll likely be battling for a roster spot there as well.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Julius is great guy to be around. He was a good guy in the locker room and one of the greatest players I have ever played with. If he's not back in a Panther uniform he will be extremely missed. (But) I'm not mad that he wants to go elsewhere. At the end of the day you have to do what's best for you and in your (own) best interest. So if he is not here next season I wish him nothing but the best and continued success." -- Panthers SS Chris Harris on DE Julius Peppers wanting out of Carolina.
