Carolina Panthers Notes, Quotes 2008-07-28
Jake Delhomme continues to show no ill effects from Tommy John surgery on his elbow.

In fact, Delhomme said he doesn't even notice it anymore.

"The last few years after the first practice I iced right away," Delhomme said after Saturday morning's first training-camp practice. "Now that you brought it up, that's the first time I've thought about it. I just walked past the trainer. I didn't even think (of) going and putting ice on my arm.

"I will ice, there's no doubt, but that's more just trying to stay ahead of the game. We'll see. Things went well this morning."

Delhomme is expected to be on the field for all practices, according to coach John Fox. However, Fox said the Panthers will continue to monitor Delhomme's progress and make sure he doesn't overthrow. He didn't throw at all in team drills in Saturday night's practice.

"Just like a pitcher in spring training, you don't want him to wear it out," Fox said. "But really, we're handling it no different than any other year."

--Carolina Panthers first-round draft pick Jonathan Stewart went from Motel 6 to millionaire on Saturday.

Most people can live their entire lives and not have a day quite like the one 21-year-old Stewart had Saturday. After all, how many people do you know are awaken from their bed at the Motel 6 at 6 a.m. by a text message from their agent informing them they're an instant multimillionaire?

But that's exactly what happened to Stewart.

After talking with his agent late Friday afternoon, Stewart thought his deal was just about done, so he jumped in a car Friday night and drove from Charlotte to training camp in Spartanburg, S.C., to join his teammates. When he pulled into Spartanburg, however, he was informed the deal still wasn't done.

There were still some details to iron out.

"They told me I wasn't supposed to be here. So I had to find somewhere to stay," Stewart said.

So Stewart drove until he found a nearby Motel 6.

Why, you ask, did a soon-to-be millionaire crash at a discount motel chain ($37.99 per night)? It wasn't just because they left the light on for him.

"Because I didn't have any money," Stewart said.

He was being serious.

Well, that's something he no longer has to worry about. Stewart can probably purchase a few Motel 6s after signing a five-year contract Saturday morning that included $10.8 million in guaranteed money and could pay him as much as $20 million overall if he reaches certain incentives.

--LB Thomas Davis unleashed two big hits on rookie RB Jonathan Stewart on Saturday, but said he has one regret.

"I wish it would have been DeAngelo (Williams)," Davis said.

When asked to elaborate, Davis laughed and replied, "Well, (Stewart) is a really quiet guy. That's (the) kind of guy you like to have on your team. He's not out boasting and doing a whole lot of talk. Then you have a guy like DeAngelo that loves running his mouth. That's why I wish it had been DeAngelo."

--There was no way Jeff Otah was going to hold out of camp. At least that is what he said.

When negotiations came down to the wire, Otah said he talked to his agent, Eric Metz, and said, "Just wrap it up; let's go. Just take what they give me."

Otah did just that, accepting a five-year contract worth $14 million overall, including $8.9 million guaranteed.

--There were some comical moments Saturday. Early on, FB Brad Hoover made a nice grab in the flat and attempted to show off by spinning the football, similar to how Smith does. The only problem was the ball didn't spin, but instead bounced harmlessly away, drawing a roar from the nearby crowd. Hoover walked away laughing.

Later in that same practice, DT Maake Kemoeatu jumped offsides on a hard count by Jake Delhomme. The play ended and Delhomme smiled at Kemoeatu and then promptly kicked him in the rear end as the big man walked back sheepishly to the other side of the line of scrimmage.

--The Panthers have plenty of new faces on the roster this year.

In fact, only 42 remain from last year.

"When you go 8-8 and 7-9, that's average. That happens," Delhomme said. "That's our business. You're looking to get replaced. And if we have one of those seasons this year, there will be a lot of new faces next year. If you can't get excited to go out and do well, there's something wrong.

"But I like the new faces we have. We got better by addition. I think we got better by subtraction as well. I like the energy we have. Guys just go about their business and do things the right way because we're under a microscope in this league. But that's part of it and you better embrace it and accept it."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think (RT) Jeff Otah, he looks like he has that streak in him. And that streak, I mean he has that nastiness to him. It's a good thing. It's what you want as an O-lineman. I think he has that and I think catching a glimpse of him today, you can kind of tell. Certainly for (RB) Jonathan Stewart, this is very new to him. This is minicamp to him. He did not get to have the 16 practices that we've had already (because of turf toe injury). But you can tell that he's pretty powerful, he's pretty explosive. Certainly when you put on pads, it's a little different and I think everybody will be a little rusty that first day." -- QB Jake Delhomme, on the team's two first-round draft picks.
