Carolina Panthers Notes, Quotes 2009-03-30
--Every year the NFL gives bonuses to players on the lower end of the NFL pay scale based on playing time and performance and this year two Carolina players were handsomely rewarded for their efforts, according to the NFL.

Carolina free safety Charles Godfrey received the eighth-highest bonus in the league, netting an additional $311,294, while tight end Jeff King earned an additional $254,062.

The money comes from a pool of money and is mostly given to younger players and is largely based on the number of snaps they take during a season. Both Godfrey and King started every game last season for the Panthers, but both earned minimum base salaries.

San Diego offensive tackle Jeromey Clary received the most money in the NFL's performance-based pay system, which rewards players for playing time based upon their salary level, the league announced Tuesday. Approximately $105 million was distributed to players in the system for their performance during the 2008 playing season.

According to the NFL, performance-based pay was created as part of the NFL's 2002 collective bargaining agreement extension with the NFL Players Association. The system sets up a fund to supplement player compensation based on a comparison of playing time to salary.

--Tight end Jeff King has agreed to sign his restricted free agent tender that will pay him $1.545 million this season. Carolina's other two restricted free agents, linebacker James Anderson and safety Nate Salley, have not signed their contracts yet.

--Fox talked about who will be the No. 3 cornerback behind starters Richard Marshall and Chris Gamble.

"That's hard to predict. Obviously, we wouldn't have (released starter Ken Lucas) if we didn't think so," Fox told reporters including the Charlotte Observer this past week at the league owners' meetings in California." (We have) C.J. (Wilson) and Dante (Wesley). And we haven't had a draft yet. We're not done with the selection process. It's really too hard to predict yet. But with the guys we have, obviously we have a comfort zone with those guys.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We got our first-rounder last year in Jeffrey Otah. As far as cap-wise, I don't know that we've ever been really big players in free agency to begin with. I think we've got a good young core for a football team. We're comfortable working through the draft, and always have been." -- Coach John Fox on if he's concerned about not having a first-round pick in this year's NFL draft.
