Carolina Panthers Strategy and Personnel 2008-12-10
PLAYER NOTES

--WR Dwayne Jarrett was named the team's No. 3 receiver ahead of D.J. Hackett on Monday night.

--OT Jeremy Bridges was declared inactive for Monday night's game due to his arrest on Saturday night.

--RB Jonathan Stewart set a team rookie record with his seventh rushing touchdown of the season on a 2-yard run in the first half. He eclipsed the mark set by Fred Lane. He added another touchdown run in the fourth quarter to put the Panthers up for good.

--WR DeAngelo Williams needs 305 yards in the final three games to set a franchise record for rushing yards in a season. He has run for at least 100 yards in five of his past six games and has 11 touchdowns during that span.

--QB Jake Delhomme threw five interceptions and one touchdown in two games against the Bucs this season.

REPORT CARD VS. BUCCANEERS

PASSING OFFENSE: B-minus -- Jake Delhomme was picked off twice, leading to Tampa Bay's first 10 points of the game. But keep in mind he also led the Panthers to a 38-point game and was 14 of 20 for 173 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown pass to Steve Smith. Smith, by the way, set a franchise record for career 100-yard receiving games after catching nine passes for 117 yards. He also went over 1,000 yards receiving, not an uncommon event in his stellar career. Muhsin Muhammad was a factor on the first drive with two catches and finished with 43 yards on three grabs. Carolina allowed just one sack, and Delhomme should have thrown that one away.

RUSHING OFFENSE: A-plus -- What more can you ask for? RBs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart combined for 301 yards rushing on 34 carries and four touchdowns. And that came against a defense that entered the game giving up less than 100 rushing yards per game and had allowed just one rushing touchdown all season. One of the main differences for the Panthers from the last time around against Tampa Bay (20 carries, 40 yards) is that they had RT Jeff Otah and C Ryan Kalil back in the lineup. They missed the last game due to injuries. "I think that was a factor," coach John Fox said.

PASS DEFENSE: B-minus -- This is a mixed bag. The Panthers allowed Jeff Garcia to throw for 321 yards and Antonio Bryant to catch nine passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns. Yet, the Panthers sacked Garcia five times -- which is not easy to do -- and managed to get off the field on two key second-half possessions. The bottom line is the Panthers were good enough on defense to win this game. Richard Marshall will need to step up his game. Ken Lucas got beat for a long touchdown, although it looked as if Bryant may have gotten away with a push-off. Carolina's linebackers and defensive backs had problems catching the ball; Dante Wesley should have had two interceptions and Na'il Diggs one.

RUSH DEFENSE: B-plus -- The Panthers did a much better job this time around against the Bucs, limiting them to 86 yards on 24 carries (3.6 average). Warrick Dunn, who had 112 yards and a touchdown in the last meeting, had 49 yards on 10 carries Monday night. Carolina did allow Cadillac Williams to run for a score.

SPECIAL TEAMS: B -- Nothing exciting here. Mark Jones didn't put up great numbers, and his average was hurt by a penalty on a kickoff return. John Kasay connected on his only field-goal attempt, and Jason Baker basically got the night off. He punted just once, that coming near the end of the game. Carolina did recover an onside kick with less than three minutes to play, and the Panthers were solid in coverage.

COACHING: A-plus -- The Panthers proved they were ready and they could win the big one. Carolina was no doubt prepared for just about everything the Bucs threw at them. The Panthers ran for 215 yards in the second half, so you have to imagine they made some nice adjustments at halftime.
