REPORT CARD VS. GIANTS
PASSING OFFENSE: C-plus - QB Jake Delhomme made plays when he had to for the most part, completing 11 of 19 passes for 185 yards. The one pass he couldn't make was on a third-and-3 slant to Muhsin Muhammad in overtime. That pass was batted away. Muhammad had been making big plays and finished with four catches for 80 yards. Steve Smith had a disappointing game with three catches for 47 yards, including no receptions in the second half. That snapped Smith's string of 100-yard receiving games at four. Carolina did protect Delhomme well, allowing no sacks.
RUSHING OFFENSE: A -- Running back DeAngelo Williams ran for 108 yards on 24 carries and scored four touchdowns, and yet the Panthers still couldn't win the game. Williams, who was snubbed by the Pro Bowl, now leads the NFL in total touchdowns (20) and rushing touchdowns (18). Jonathan Stewart wasn't as effective, rushing for 29 yards on nine carries. He left the game for about a quarter after taking a shot to the head, but did return. The only mistake the Panthers made in the running game was Steve Smith's costly holding penalty on a late fourth quarter drive.
PASS DEFENSE: C -- Eli Manning completed 17 of 27 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked three times, but he was highly effective throughout the game, especially on third down where the Giants converted 9 of 16 third downs. New York receivers kept finding spots in the Carolina zone, and Manning made the Panthers pay with short passes underneath the coverage. Outside of a 40-yard pass play on their first possession, the Giants longest pass went for 15 yards.
RUSH DEFENSE: F - Giants backup RB Derrick Ward ran for 215 yards on 15 carries, a whopping 14.3 yards per carry and the Giants piled up 301 yards on the ground against a Carolina team missing defensive tackle Maake Kemoeatu. Ward ran for 88 yards in overtime. Brandon Jacobs had 87 yards and three touchdown runs, including the game-winner from 2 yards out in overtime.
SPECIAL TEAMS: C -- John Kasay had a chance to win it for the Panthers with nine seconds left in regulation, but his 50-yard field goal with a 20 mph crosswind sailed wide left. Mark Jones did a decent job in the return game and Jason Baker was fine on punt returns.
COACHING: B -- The Panthers were well prepared for this one, scoring touchdowns on their first three possessions, but the defense, which was missing injured DT Maake Kemoeatu, had no answer for the Giants' running game.
