Tyler Truttmann made the most of his first collegiate start at quarterback.
The freshman from Columbia High accounted for five touchdowns, leading Quincy University (6-5) over William Penn 45-42 in a Mid-States Football Association Midwest League game.
Truttmann passed for 244 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 106 yards and two scores. He was replacing starter Sam Donatucci, also a freshman, who was sidelined with a broken foot.
"Truttmann stepped up huge," said Quincy coach Bill Terlisner, an Alton native. "The kids who needed to have big days had big days."
Truttmann was a standout a year ago at Columbia, leading the Eagles to a second-place finish in Class 3A. He threw for 1,992 yards and 22 touchdowns.
The victory assured Quincy a third straight winning record for the first time since the school reintroduced Football 22 years ago.
SALUKIS GET CLOSE
SIU-Carbondale can clinch the Missouri Valley Football Conference's automatic berth in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) postseason tournament with a win Saturday at Illinois State.
A victory would guarantee the Salukis (8-2, 6-1 MVC) no worse than a share of the league title with Northern Iowa (9-2, 7-1 MVC). SIUC would win the tiebreaker on the strength of its 27-24 win over the Panthers on Sept. 27 in Carbondale.
