Dom Capers, the Green Bay Packers' new defensive coordinator, made his mark in the National Football League as the coach of the Carolina Panthers.

His staff of position coaches is now taking on a Carolina flavor, also.

Although the Packers have yet to officially announce the new hirings, Mike Trgovac and Kevin Greene have been added to the defensive staff, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Trgovac was the Carolina defensive coordinator for the past six seasons but decided he needed a change of scenery. He had been offered a contract to return as the Panthers' defensive coordinator but instead will join the Packers as defensive line coach.

Trgovac was the Packer defensive line coach in 1999 for Ray Rhodes. Although Trgovac was the Panthers' defensive coordinator, he was not with Carolina while Capers was the head coach.

Greene played for Capers in both Pittsburgh and Carolina.

He was with Pittsburgh while Capers was the Steelers defensive coordinator and for two seasons in Carolina while Capers was the head coach.

This will be Greene's first job as a coach. He has served as a volunteer assistant during training camp before but was never on a staff full-time. Greene was an outside linebacker in Capers' 3-4 systems in both Pittsburgh and Carolina and it is expected he will be a key cog in teaching the Packer linebackers the nuances of the new system.

Linebackers coach Winston Moss remains on the staff. Greene will be listed as the outside linebackers coach, while Moss' title will change from assistant head coach/linebackers to assistant head coach/inside linebackers.

Greene has spent time in the previous five summers as a volunteer assistant with Pittsburgh, Miami, Jacksonville, St. Louis and Cincinnati. He was not interested in becoming a full-time assistant at the time, but told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Monday that the chance to join Capers in Green Bay was too good to pass up.

"We had talked over the years and I never thought it was the right time," Greene told the Journal Sentinel. "I told him when I called him this was the right time. I wanted to get into it."

Greene led the NFL in sacks in 1994 with Pittsburgh and 1996 with Carolina. His 160 career sacks rank him third on the NFL's all-time list.

The official announcement of the hirings is expected in the next couple of days.

The Packers still have coaching vacancies to fill at cornerbacks, safeties and on the defensive line.

With the 4-3 defense in the past, the Packers had one coach for linebackers, one coach for defensive ends and one for defensive tackles. It is not yet known if the Packers will have just one coach for the defensive line now that they have two for linebackers.

The Packers also have yet to hire a strength and conditioning coach, which is considered a coordinator position.
