A Clifton, N.J., police official yesterday confirmed that Giants wide receiver Steve Smith was robbed at gunpoint at around 4 a.m. on Nov. 25 near his home, located about 20 minutes west of Giants Stadium.
Detective Captain Robert Rowan told Newsday that Smith was held up just after being dropped off in a limousine after a night out with friends.
"As [Smith] was returning home on Nov. 25 at about 4 a.m., as he was approaching the front steps of his house, he noticed a person standing behind him holding a revolver," Rowan said. "[Smith] turned around, and [the assailant] said, 'Give me everything you've got,' and then robbed him of his money and his jewelry. The matter is under continued investigation at this time."
Rowan said the driver of the limousine Smith used had been questioned in connection with the incident, but Smith said he did not believe the driver was the assailant or knew whom it was.
"[Smith] said it was an unknown assailant," Rowan said. "At this stage, you don't rule anybody out, but we haven't keyed on his driver ... We do have a few leads that we're currently pursuing."
A league source said Giants receiver Plaxico Burress, who was charged Monday with two felony counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree in connection with an accidental shooting early Saturday morning at a New York nightclub, was aware of Smith's robbery.
