The Carolina Panthers have suspended wide receiver Steve Smith two games for his involvement in the fight with cornerback Ken Lucas in training camp. Smith will be allowed to play in preseason games and practice with the team beginning Monday, August 4.
Smith's punch resulted in a broken nose for Lucas, according to head coach John Fox. This is the second time Smith has been suspended for an altercation during training camp. He was involved in a fight with a practice squad player in 2002 and was suspended one game, which is likely the reason Smith received two games for this altercation. Smith was facing a suspension of up to four games this time around. It's not outside the realm of possibility NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will add to the punishment, but it's not certain or even likely at this time.
Smith had a solid 2007 campaign. Playing with a multitude of quarterbacks ranging from Matt Moore to Vinny Testaverde toDavid Carr to Jake Delhomme, Smith caught 87 passes for 1,002 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games. However, he was a bit inconsistent during the season. He had four 100-yard games, but also had three games with fewer than 20 receiving yards. Another negative was that he only caught one touchdown pass in his last nine games, but that could be attributed to the quarterback carousel. Smith caught four touchdown passes from Delhomme in the pair's three games together, but after that, he hauled in only three scores the rest of the season.
From a fantasy perspective, this obviously hurts owners in leagues who have already drafted. Smith is probably a No. 1 wide receiver for many owners and was likely drafted in the first three rounds. Owners will now have to grin and bear being without Smith for the first two weeks of the season. Owners will have to look at their No. 3, No. 4 or No. 5 fantasy receivers to pick up the slack the first two weeks or monitor other situations to try to find a short-term fix on the waiver wire.
Smith is probably a top-three fantasy receiver in terms of talent and potential, but uncertainty surrounding his situation in recent season has made him a volatile selection. Smith's health and, now, character issues, as well as Carolina's instability at quarterback, mean he carries considerable risk. The news that he'll miss two games may be enough to knock him down draft boards by a full round, although owners who know what he's capable of may not be fazed.
Wide receiver D.J. Hackett will likely start opposite wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad in Weeks 1 and 2. Hackett missed a majority of the 2007 season with ankle problems, but was productive when he did play. He had 32 receptions for 384 yards and three touchdowns in six games. He came through in a big way for the Seahawks in their wild card game, catching six passes for 101 yards and a touchdown.
Hackett could be a decent No. 4 or weak No. 3 receiver for the first two weeks, but Smith's suspension does not drive up Hackett's fantasy draft value much, if at all. Muhammad seems to have the edge to start ahead of Hackett while Smith is active. The two games may give Hackett a chance to showcase his ability and make a case to start, but it shouldn't be counted on.
Wideout Dwayne Jarrett also receives a slight boost in value for the first two weeks. He has reportedly looked good early in training camp, but as the team's probable No. 3 for those games, he still has minimal value. He remains unworthy of a draft pick. This incident does not affect the draft stock of Muhammad. He is not draftable in most formats, either.
